Montgomery is the capital city of the U.S. state of Alabama and the seat of Montgomery County. [9] It was named for Continental Army Major-General Richard Montgomery and stands beside the Alabama River on the Gulf Coastal Plain. The population was 200,603 at the 2020 census. [6]
